Book Description

Argentine Tango has been caricatured in television and movies, romanticized in dozens of memoirs, and analyzed by a handful of academic works. Until Forever is the first popular culture reveal about this global subculture with nightly social events in every major city, Dancers brag about their addiction while it emaciates their lives.
Tango reliably transports amateurs not only to the psychological state of Flow but also to an experience of perfect unity with another person (often a stranger), accompanied by a sense of inevitability and a perception of artistic import. Known as the king of partner dances due to its superlative demands and possibilities, tango’s dark side is duly sophisticated, banking on the failures of feminism, the commercialization of community, the violent silence of racism, the disjuncture of status and wealth, and the conflict between culture and art.
When I started to dance Argentine Tango I was in my eighth year of an R1 academic career, based on a prescient dissertation. My third academic book was in press. I owned a house in Colorado. I lived in LA at Venice Beach. I drove a 7-series BMW. I had a Sub-Zero refrigerator. I had finally found my soulmate. What did I do after my addiction cost me my career, my house, and my love? Became a professional dancer.
Financial and emotional desperation is electroplated to the pride and glamour of this life. I started a blog in 2010, because the dissonance demanded all my faculties. Now I drag the social scientist to the scene to enumerate the facts of the case. The book is informed by roughly 2000 conversations with my students and fellow dancers in 5 countries, augmented by email correspondence with dancers who reach out to me from many parts of the world: “I read your blog. It’s like my soul outside.”
