How to Dance More in Milongas: For Argentine Tango Followers, Argentine tango book by Dimitris Bronowski, cover

About this Argentine tango book for followers

Why do some followers dance all night while others wait tanda after tanda? How to Dance More in Milongas by Dimitris Bronowski sheds light on how leaders really choose their dance partners at milongas, and on what followers can do to dance more, and better, when they want to.

The book began with a question from an experienced follower who took classes, travelled for tango and went to milongas often, yet could not understand why nobody asked her to dance. Dimitris realized that his own answer was only a guess, and that most dancers rely on assumptions that sound obvious: that leaders only want young and attractive partners, that beginners are always ignored, or that some groups are just there to show off. To test those assumptions he asked about 15,000 social tango dancers why they dance with some people, why they avoid others, and what they do to dance more. The results surprised him and challenged many common beliefs about the cabeceo and partner choice.

What you will find inside

  • What thousands of leaders say about how they choose partners at a milonga
  • Which common assumptions about age, looks and level turn out to be wrong
  • Why some dancers we would not expect to dance much seem to dance all night
  • Practical, tested steps followers can take to get more and better tandas
  • Insights gathered with the community of The Curious Tanguero newsletter

Who is this book for?

Tango followers at any level who want more dances and more enjoyable nights at the milonga, and leaders and organizers who want to understand the social side of the dance floor.

Why we recommend it

Many tango books talk about technique; very few talk honestly about the hardest part of a milonga night: waiting to be invited. This book is valuable because it replaces guesses with what thousands of real dancers said. The tone is kind, never blaming, and the advice is practical enough to try at your very next milonga. Followers who feel invisible will find both comfort and a clear plan, and leaders will recognise themselves, sometimes with a smile. We recommend it to every follower who has ever left a milonga early, and to organizers who want more people dancing and fewer sitting by the wall.

More dances after reading this book!

This book was a great help to me early in my Tango journey. As a beginning follower, I was eager to gain experience but frustratingly found myself sitting down through tanda after tanda. Once I started reading this book I couldn’t put it down. It helped me see the situation realistically, helped me avoid taking things personally, and helped me change my attitude and approach. Now a much better dancer, I get all the tandas I want; but part of that improvement involved getting more dances so I could improve. …

Great insights

Having danced Tango for over 15 years, I can wholeheartedly say that the insights which are shared in this book are helpful as well for followers (beginner and advanced) and also for leaders. I myself lead and follow and I could find my experiences mirrored in this book. One of the most interesting chapter for myself was the one which gives ideas to change yourself from a grumpy unhappy mood to a happy one without faking it. I think that this is one of the most important messages as it is so easy to fall in the trap of feeling unhappy in a Milonga because this or that person is not dancing with you or because you missed out some nice Tandas. …

Brutally honest!

I’m only about a quarter of the way through the book, and as a male leader, I can say a majority of the reason mentioned so far are exactly why I don’t dance with certain followers. If as a follower you feel you’re not being invited to dance as often as you would like, this book is for you.I think there is a lot of value for leaders to read this book as well. I bought the book so I might be able to help my friends get more dances, but in reading it, I’ve found myself being a little more sympathetic towards the followers or potential-followers I don’t dance with for whatever reason.

Good book, lots of useful info

This is well worth buying. There's a lot of useful information, clearly explained in a friendly manner. It does favour the Cabeceo, so if you prefer to verbally ask or want to know how to navigate dancers/venues that verbally ask, you'll feel like there's a chapter missing. But even without this, the quantity, quality and clarity of the rest of the information in this book still easily makes it a 5 star and is worth your time.

Great Kindle Book!!! Recommendation for every Tanguera! ❤️

I read the whole book... It changed my entire tango life. 😁😍 A few weeks ago, a leader said to me, "Oh, there are so many tangueras here today!" I smiled a little and said, "Maybe, but I didn't notice." And that was the truth...🙈 I dance much more now and know how to do it. And of course, I'm trying to further refine my technical skills...

Very helpful!

This is one of the few books I have managed to finish in recent years! I liked it because it's based on the author's research, not just his subjective views. The information really helped me to enjoy milongas more.

Definitely adds to having a great experience at a milonga

I have been dancing tango for close to 15 years and thought that I knew a lot about dancing a lot in milongas. I was surprised how much more I learned?
