About this tango music book

Osvaldo Fresedo (1897-1984) was the tango bandleader who brought romance to the dance floor by giving prominence to the melody. Always inventive, playful and modern, he eventually broke with the conventions of the orquesta típica, adding vibraphone, harp and guitar to his line-up to create a dreamy, romantic style that dancers still love.

Tango Masters: Osvaldo Fresedo follows a recording career that spanned more than sixty years, the longest and most varied of any tango musician, from the early days of tango through the Golden Age and beyond. It helps dancers recognise the different periods of the orchestra and hear what makes its elegant, refined sound unique.

What you will find inside

  • Introductions to the key musicians of the orchestra, so you can hear them within the music
  • Listening guides to the most important dance recordings
  • The story of the bandleader set against Argentina’s social and cultural history
  • Discographies and notes that help DJs choose and dancers understand the music
  • Research by Michael Lavocah, author of Tango Stories: Musical Secrets

Who is this book for?

Tango dancers who want to understand and feel the music they dance to, tango DJs building tandas, and anyone who loves the Golden Age orchestras. It reads well alongside your own listening, one recording at a time.

Why we recommend it

Fresedo is the orchestra of soft lights and romantic tandas, and this volume finally gives him the attention he deserves. Lavocah guides you through more than six decades of recordings, helping you hear the harp, vibraphone and refined melodies that make Fresedo unique. Understanding the different eras makes it easier to dance his music with lightness and tenderness rather than force. We recommend it to dancers who love a gentle, melodic embrace, to DJs who want to place Fresedo tandas at the right moment of the night, and to collectors who want to complete their Tango Masters shelf with this beautiful sixth volume.
